MAMbo presents The Floating Collection, a group show that stems from the desire to study the rich collections of Bologna’s museums, the Bologna Civic Museums Sector and other city museum systems, through the eyes of six of the most prominent contemporary artists: Alex Ayed (Strasbourg, 1989), Rä Di Martino (Rome, 1975), Cevdet Erek (Istanbul, 1974), David Jablonowski (Bochum, 1982), Miao Ying (Shanghai, 1985), Alexandra Pirici (Bucharest, 1982).
In their relationship with the city’s cultural heritage, the six invited artists have turned it into a research platform to rethink the past, present and future of the museum institution and imagine its unprecedented form, still in the making.
The Floating Collection, curated by Lorenzo Balbi and Caterina Molteni, reflects on a possible decolonisation of cultural imagery and museum exhibition practices, in which “decolonising” becomes an operational choice, a modus operandi. Inspired by the debate and the processes of decolonisation initiated in ethnographic and anthropological museums around the world, the exhibition intends to study their methods, applying them to a conscious analysis of local cultural heritage and to an exhibition practice capable of welcoming the plurality of narratives, identities and social specificities that characterise our contemporaneity.
