The Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna, MAMbo - Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna and the Museo Morandi of the Settore Musei Civici Bologna commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of Francesco Arcangeli, a key figure in 20th century art history and criticism, through a series of initiatives dedicated to him. Arcangeli played a significant role in the direction of the Pinacoteca and as director of the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, now known as MAMbo.
The project, entitled ‘Tramando’, reflects Arcangeli's idea of continuity between past and present art, with particular attention to his critical vision that considered ‘tramando’ as an invisible thread connecting different artists in time and space.
The initiatives include tours through museum collections, reading groups, an exhibition and a series of lectures. The first event will be a reading group led by Jadranka Bentini at the Art Gallery, who will read four fundamental texts by Arcangeli. The meetings start on 9 May 2024.
The centrepiece of the project will be a tour through the three museum venues, examining the artists studied by Arcangeli. Each museum will present works and artists related to Arcangeli's research. The presentation of the route to the press will take place on 23 May, and will be open to the public until 6 January 2025. A lecture series will also be organised, the first session of which will be held on 29 May 2024 at the Pinacoteca, focusing on Arcangeli's relationship with the museum in Via Belle Arti. The concluding lecture, entitled ‘On the Tramando’, will be held on 18 September 2024.
In the second half of the year, MAMbo and Museo Morandi will present a Project Room exhibition dedicated to Arcangeli's acquisitions for the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, featuring works that have not been exhibited for some time and works donated by Morandi in 1961.
